Health and Wellbeing
At Hathern CE Primary School all our pupils are encouraged
to take part in a wide range of activities and experiences across and beyond
the curriculum, learning to respond positively to challenges, handling risk and
developing self-confidence and physical capabilities. This is essential to them
contributing fully to the life of our school and to the wider communities they
belong to. We believe this will better support the children to transfer
successfully to secondary education and develop as confident individuals. School tries to help families by:
Promoting healthy eating
* We provide free fruit (and vegetables) for Foundation and Key Stage 1 and encourage Key Stage 2 children to bring in fruit from home to eat at morning break-time.
* We encourage healthy lunchboxes.
* We operate a ‘nut-free’ policy.
* We do not allow sweets and biscuits at breaktime.
* We encourage children to have a water bottle and drink plenty of fluid.
* Milk is available every day (http://www.coolmilk.com/).
Promoting sensible bed-times during the School week
* Parents usually find that a fixed routine of bath/shower, story, bed (no TV/iPads/Playstations!) and sleep works best - teachers certainly see the benefits of a well rested child.
Promoting exercise
* All children have 2 PE lessons a week, active play at breaktimes, organised physical activity at lunchtimes and additional clubs to promote a healthy lifestyle.
* Children (and their parents) are encouraged to walk or 'scoot' to school.
Promoting the work of the School Nurse
* The School Nurse can be contacted on 01509 564485. She offers advice to parents on any issue ranging from bed-wetting to headlice, food refusal, diet, sleep, etc. The School Nurse also provides counselling to pupils, for example, in managing anxiety or temper.
Promoting Emotional Wellbeing
* The children are encouraged to talk with adults in school if they are concerned or worried about something. Pastoral Care is a priority for all staff, and key members (headteacher, classteachers, teaching assistants and lunchtime adimistrators) are available during the school day for any child who needs someone to talk to.
* Pupils in Key Stage 2 also have access to emotional support from Mrs Sue Hack, a qualified and experienced Emotional Therapist. She provides pupils with another outlet for them to share worries or questions, and which are dealt with in a confidential and sensitive manner. Parental permission would be required for your child to take advantage of this support (see Permission/Request slips).
