School Council Suggestions
Pupils may have noticed a box pop up in school where they can write ideas and suggestions for their school council.
The Year 6 councillors came to Mrs Scott this week with some suggestions from the box.
There have been lots of requests for a pyjama day, many for a Year 6 climbing tree, lots of votes for non-uniform and 8 votes for...cheesecake! Haha! Keep the suggestions coming in - School Council will review and prioritise them at their next meeting.

Year 6 pupils visit London!
Year 6 were invited to the Houses of Parliament. It was a long way to travel but a truly memorable day. We got to sit in on a live debate in the House of Commons and the House of Lords. We toured the Houses of Parliament and Westminster Hall. No photos were allowed inside and we had to go through lots of security checks which made us feel very official.
We enjoyed our lunch in the Victoria Tower gardens where we saw the Emmeline Pankhurst statue and gazed across the Thames to the London Eye and Westminster Bridge. The coach ride out of London allowed us to see Westminster Abbey, Big Ben, the WInter Wonderland, Wembley and even a few fireworks on November 5th!

Fieldwork in Year 1
Class 1 had a walk around Hathern as part of our Geography fieldwork. We found lots of local land marks we recognised including school, the park, Cross street stores, 'top school', the church, library, village hall, doctors and hairdressers. We waved at several children's houses on the way round too! Great spotting everyone.

Year 6 have been asking, "What was the journey like for people in different classes on board The Titanic?"
They calculated statistics related to the lifeboats and measured the size of them on the playground. We know that the length of the shop was 269m and we measured this as the distance from the Pasture Lane gate to the Cross Street Surgery gate!

Year 6 really enjoyed their workshop with Hardy’s Photography. They learned about how photography has changed, making camera obscuras; they used professional cameras and spotlights to take their own shots; and they explored light photography, making patterned light images in a dark room. They also experimented with AI to recognise how much of what we see online has been adapted or invented in some way!

VE Day
All classes paused to learn about Victory in Europe Day. The children who attended the Community Café in church this week enjoyed talking to people who could share their experiences of war-time.
Year 3 whipped up some carrot cookies to mark the 80th anniversary of VE Day. We hope parents enjoyed them!
During World War 2, the humble carrot was a vegetable staple that was used in a plethora of recipes, including desserts. The root vegetable could be found in allotments up and down the country and remains a British staple to this day. Carrots' subtle sweet flavour made it the perfect natural sweetener and was often used in place of exotic, imported fruits. In fact, carrots were promoted during World War 2 for their health benefits, with the character of 'Doctor Carrot' being created to encourage people to consume and grow the humble vegetable.

Happy Easter to all of our Hathern families!

Children were surprised before dinner with a story during the secret teacher swap, and they enjoyed reading with pupils in other classes and outside. Lots of children took part in a 'Ready, Steady, Read' sponsored challenge and lots of free books were given away at the end of the school day. The Scholastic Book Fair will be in school next week so we can spend our £1 book tokens if we haven't already.
