Ethos and values - Being a Church school
There is a clear vision at Hathern CE which is communicated effectively through policies, the school website and the aims of school (which are rooted in Christian values of hope, love and respect). The school’s development plan has separate sections on collective worship and R.E. which identify specific actions to ensure both remain as priorities. A very detailed evaluation of key aspects of school life shows that the staff and governors seem to have a very good understanding of the strengths of this as a church school and areas for development. The RE coordinator, who also teaches RE across the school, is fully involved in monitoring and ensuring high quality provision. Members of the PCC from our church (St Peter and St Pauls’) regularly attend acts of Collective Worship and conduct learning walks.
Relationships within the school community are characterized by Christian care and love for each other, through a focus on core values (CARE Code – Cooperation, Awareness, Respect and Enjoyment). Our CARE Code embodies British Values which are reflected in our day to day practice. Opportunities are provided for moments of personal reflection within assemblies and displays encourage interaction and reflection. Children in KS2 visit places of worship of other faiths following the introduction of a revised rolling programme for the teaching of RE (September 2021). There are very good systems in place for rewards and achievements are celebrated regularly. Children’s behaviour is likely to be excellent.
Being a Church of England voluntary controlled school, strong links are maintained between the village church and school. Hathern Church is part of a Benefice of 6 churches, including Hathern, and the Team Vicar is a Foundation Governor of the school. A member of the church currently leads one act of Collective Worship in school each month. Classes also visit the church as part of their learning, and take great delight in helping to decorate the church around each major festival.
Pupil’s written work and artwork is displayed in the church on a regular basis. The school also participates in the church’s annual Christmas Tree Festival with each class decorating a tree and the school choir performing at the Festival. A church notice board in the Main Reception of the school informs parents of church events, inviting the school community into church. A school notice board is on display in the church, further forging the link between us.
