Literacy
We shall be focusing on transition this week in preparation for the end of the school year and looking forward to the start of next year with the children's Year 1 teacher Mrs Bratton.
We shall be using some of the Twinkl texts to help us to understand how change might makes us feel and how to cope with these feelings.
We shall talk lots about expectations but also focus on how much things will feel the same - same friends, same building, same playground, same dinner hall etc.

Week Commencing 29th June 2020 Summer Term Week 5
Literacy This week we are learning all about pirates!! Yippee!!
Ten Little Pirates is great at showing us snippets of the life of a pirate with some counting skills in there too. A lovely, fun story...enjoy! The Night Pirates story gives us lots to think and talk about. After watching the video, discuss these words and what they mean... crew aboard sails island stealthy Now try to answer these questions... Why did the rough, tough pirates hide in trees? Why did Tom and the pirates sail in a house? Where do you think the rough, tough pirates got the treasure from? What were the rough, tough pirates sleeping in? Why? |

Phonics
This week we shall continue to revise the phase 2 and 3 graphemes and tricky words but each lesson we will be working towards our own Buried Treasure games. Children will write their words (some real and some alien) onto the golden coins an then cut them out. When playing the game, the player choose a coin, reads the word and places it into the bin or treasure box deepening on whether it is real or rubbish.

Maths
We have a few different areas to visit this week all under the theme of Measures.
Monday Today we shall look at coins and their value. We shall order them and discuss the coins we don't have (such as a 3p coin). We shall then use them to support our understanding of halving and sharing. Using the Pirate Sharing Power Point we will learn about sharing equally into two or more groups. This will help us to identify odd and even numbers too - those we cannot share equally between two groups are odd. Tuesday Today we will learn about weight. We will make foil pirate ships (a simple boat shape) and will add coins or pieces of treasure to the boat until it sinks. We shall make predictions before we begin and talk about how the size / shape of the boat might affect how much it can hold. We will develop this into a science investigation of sinking and floating. Wednesday Today we will explore capacity and use the vocabulary 'full', 'empty', 'nearly full' and 'nearly empty'. We will use different sized containers in the water tray as well as fill pots, pans, cups and tubs with counters and pebbles etc. Thursday Today we will be talking about directions as we introduce the idea of a treasure map. We are having a treasure hunt on the school field to hunt down the treasure (chocolate coins) following the directions on the map. We will then draw our own treasure maps and direct our friends around our maps using vocabulary such as 'forwards', 'backwards' and 'turn'. |
Physical Development
We shall develop our pencil control skills by following a drawing tutorial showing us how to draw a skull and crossbones.
Pirate colouring sheets will also help us to colour within the lines. ![]()

Week Commencing 22nd June 2020 Summer Term Week 4
***Time is flying so fast! Only 3 weeks to go until the summer holidays!***
Literacy
This week we are continuing with our under water theme and studying a text called The Big Blue Whale. It's an incredibly descriptive and informative text written by a lady with first hand experience of the blue whale.
Watch the video clip of Nicola Davies (the author) reading the text - she adds some fascinating anecdotes and facts whilst she tells us the story. |
|
TASK: This week our writing job will be to write some similes about whales using some of the ideas from the text.
A simile is a sentence that describes and object by comparing it something similar. You might describe the sun to be as bright as a torch. You might describe a sheep to be as fluffy as a cloud. Start by thinking of some describing words (adjectives) for the whale and then think about what you could compare the whale's features to. |
Understanding the World
To further develop our knowledge and understanding of the under water world we shall use facts cards to read about sea creatures and learn about their habitats and lifestyles...such as seahorses, starfish, jellyfish, dolphins and crabs.
TASK: write an information sentence about a sea creature using the facts you have found out. You could draw a picture with a label too. TASK: create a 'What am I?' game to play with your adults or siblings. Write a clue about a sea creature to see if they can guess what it is. |

We have a video powerpoint to watch too this week showing us some real life whales!
|
As a treat and to explore the sea through a beautiful animation, we shall be watching The Snail and The Whale.

Maths
This week in maths we shall be looking at and understanding the idea of time.
Children in the foundation stage are required to 'use the language of time' by the end of the year. This can be interpreted in many ways but to best prepare them for their journey into year 1, we are going to focus on days of the week and o'clock.
We shall also look at sequencing familiar events as well as compare morning and afternoon in relation to the things we do at school. We shall end the week with lesson on reading the time using the hands and numbers on a clock face, we shall begin with o'clock and progress further to half past, quarter past and quarter to if and when the children are ready. We will have a go at writing different times too by drawing the hands onto a clock face.

Phonics
In Phonics this week we will continue to read and spell Phase 4 words that have adjacent consonants in them.
Last week the children blew our socks off by writing words such as chimpanzee, lunchbox and sandwich!
This week we are going to be reading and writing words like... scrunch strap spring with three consonants in a row.

Well being
We will continue to start and end each of our busy days with a calm and quiet activity.
This week we shall be...
* playing an alliteration game....one wiggly worm two tiny tigers three thin thumbs four fierce frogs
* playing rhyming tennis....one child says a word, the other replies with a word that rhymes with it, the first person says another word and so on
* playing the alphabet game....writing / drawing one picture to match each letter of the alphabet in order
* saying similes...as big as an elephant, as small as a nut, as round as a ball, as smell as a sock

Expressive Arts & Design
To continue to encourage creativity, colour mixing, selecting materials and combining materials, we always host a few craft tasks each week.
This week we will try...
* paper plate seahorses
* bubble-wrap turtles (we didn't manage to do this one last week)
* folded paper whale
We would love to see your creations on Tapestry if you decide to try some of these.

Maths.
This week we shall be learning more about doubles with the hope of being able to recall some doubles to 10.
We shall use dominoes to find pairs of numbers and count the spots to work out the total.
We will use counters and a mirror to double numbers (see picture below).
We may even try printing spots with paint an folding the page over to double the amount (see picture below).
When the children have grasped the concept of doubling meaning two lots of the same amount, we will move onto addition so that the children can see that double 4 is the same as 4+4.
