English in year 2 is split into the following lessons:
spelling/phonics, reading, writing, speaking & listening and SPaG (Spelling, Punctuation and Grammar).
Spellings: Each week children will bring home a list of words taken from the Year 2 Common Exception Words list which they need to learn to read and spell. They will be tested on these words on Wednesdays.
Reading: We encourage all children to read at home everyday. This does not need to be for a long period of time and it does not need to be their home-school books everyday. Reading a wide range of material is beneficial to children - magazines, newspapers, cereal packets, encyclopaedias, dictionaries etc etc.
Children will receive stickers each time they read at home which add up to earn prizes.
Writing: In year 2 all pupils are expected to join their handwriting. We start each year by teaching the children how to write each letter of the alphabet cursively and from there we show children how to join letters to form words. By the end of the year all pupils should be joining their handwriting neatly.

A big focus in year 2 mathematics is strategies.
After two busy years in the Foundation Stage and Year 1, children have acquired a range of techniques for solving number problems. We will now encourage children to select the most efficient method for solving more complex problems.
By the end of the year children will be using partitioning to solve addition problems, blank number lines to solve subtraction problems, sharing and grouping for division problems and children will be more confident in recalling pairs of numbers to 10, 20 and 100 as well as recalling multiplication facts.
Children will need to be able to rapidly recall the 2, 3, 5 and 10 times tables by the end of the year. We encourage these to be worked on at home as well as in mental maths sessions at school.
We use Numicon, number lines, counters, tens and units equipment and hundred squares to help us solve number problems in year 2. We work with numbers beyond 100.
