VCOP
Your child may have come home and talked about VCOP and you may have wondered what it is. VCOP stands for Vocabulary, Connectives, Openers and Punctuation and is from the work of Ros Wilson. The idea being that there are 4 key points to effective writing and this is where we get the acronym VCOP.
V = Vocabulary. These are the words that will help children to improve their writing. We encourage children to use exciting vocabulary in their writing and you can help your child at home by starting a vocabulary bank of exciting words and their meanings.
C = Connectives. These are sometimes referred to as joining words as they make our sentences longer and more varied. Younger children will learn the connective ‘and’ first but we support our children to move onto more complex connectives such as ‘…in addition to..” You can help your child at home by giving them examples of connectives and asking them to put them into an appropriate sentence.
O = Openers. These are words or phrases that we start our writing with. At home why not see how many openers you can use or spot in a newspaper report or story when you are reading together?
P = Punctuation. These are the marks we use to help us make sense of our writing. We start with full stops and capital letters but quickly move on to commas etc by Y2.
