Topic Challenge- Science
This week we are continuing our work on plants and recapping our learning on animals. Below I have attached links to the BBC Bitesize page which give you video clips and talk you through different activities you can access. Have fun!
Task 1:How do we classify animals? Watch the videos carefully over the course of the week and remind yourselves of how many 'types' of animals we have. Once you have completed this there is a quiz and a sorting activity for you to have a go at.
|
Task 2:Can you label the different parts of a plant? Watch the videos carefully over the course of the week and remind yourselves about the different parts of a plant. Once you have completed this have a go at the quiz and then there is an activity where you can label your own plant.

This week we are going to try something a little different for English. I will be setting you a daily lesson to complete set by an online school called Oak National Academy.
There will be a lesson each day taught by Miss Emms. When you click on the button below it will take you to Monday's lesson which is all about using our reading VIPERS, in particular our retrieval skill. You do not need to print anything off to complete these activities all of the work can be done into your Home Learning Books, just remember to write the short date before you start. Throughout the week the lessons will build up to you writing a setting description and they will all be based around the story The Firework Maker's Daughter.
Enjoy and I cannot wait to see how you get on!

This week we are recapping our previous learning from before Christmas.
Remember: Watch the videos before you complete your activities. Your task for Wednesday is subtraction. It has been a while since we have looked at subtraction and some of the methods used by White Rose are not how we have done it in the classroom. So I have uploaded 3 levels of work for you to choose from, please choose the one you can tackle independently.

Year 2 you have been working for hard on your predicting and comprehension skills I have a little treat for your work for today. I would like you to have a go at making a shoe box set design (or any small box you have spare). Earlier this week we had a go at describing the setting by using the picture and today I would like you to use that setting description to help you recreate your own setting of the Blue Moon. Make sure you send some pictures over to the school email. Enjoy!
Below are some examples of other shoe box set designs!

Setting Description:
Use the picture beside the task to describe the setting. Use your senses in your writing thinking about what you can: * See * Hear * Touch * Smell You may also want to write about how you feel. |
Final Writing Challenge!
Your final writing challenge based on Once Upon a Blue Moon is to write a follow up story based on the video clip. I want you to think about where the video ends and what would happen next. Imagine you have been contacted by the makers of the film and they want you to carry the story on. You could think about: * What happens with the robot and the alien's friendship? * Does the rocket come back for them? * Do they travel to another planet and explore that? Be creative! Also challenge yourself to use the writing techniques we use at school; expanded noun phrases, conjunctions, question marks and exclamation marks. |
ReadingUse the whole video to help you answer these questions into your Home Learning book.
1. How is the alien feeling at the start of the film? 2. What is the alien trying to do when we first meet him? 3. What made him feel fed up after doing this for a while? 4. How does the alien feel when the explorer robot arrives? 5. What did the alien want the explorer robot to do? 6. Name two things that annoyed the explorer robot? 7. What was the main problem at the end of the story? Fancy some extra reading? Try the 60 second read below!

This week we are continuing our work on Once in a Blue Moon. We will be still focusing on our comprehension skills, thinking particularly about the characters are their journey through the story. Our reading and writing activities will overlap on most days so I will add extra reading comprehension to its own reading section.
Writing
Character description: Using all your work from last week, write a character description about the robot into your Home Learning book. Make sure you think about:
* What the robot looks like * How the robot behaves * What we know about how the robot spends its time * The relationship between the robot and the alien |
Reading
Think back to when we read the story Iris and Isaac about the two polar bears. We created an axis of emotion which showed us how they felt at different points of the story. Today we are going to create an axis of emotion about how the alien and the robot feel during the story. There are five pictures along the bottom of the graph and you can use two colours to track the two different characters and how their emotions change.
Fancy an extra challenge? Why not add some evidence to your chart to tell me how you know that is how the character is feeling. |

Reading
Last week you had a go at writing a letter to the robot advising him what to do when the spaceship left him. I have had a go at writing my own letter to the robot. For your first task this week I would like you to read through the letter and answer 7 comprehension questions about the letter using your VIPERS.
Reading update: 60 second read below to keep you busy!
Writing update:
Once you have completed a Role on the Wall for one of the characters, have a go at completing another one for the character. Once you have done this can you complete the Venn diagram comparing both characters. Remember, the similarities go in the middle where the two circles overlap. I have uploaded a blank sheet for you to see the layout.
|
WritingRemember Role on the Wall? I would like you to choose one of the characters, either the alien or the robot and complete a role on the wall for this character. Do not worry about printing the sheet, draw your own outline into your books and get working!
Remember inside the body we put how the character is thinking and feeling and outside the body we put how we know this. I have added an example to remind you!

English
For English this week we are going to be using our fantastic predicting and comprehension skills to figure out what we think a short video clip will be about. This is something we do a lot in the classroom Year 2, so I am hoping you can use that understanding to help you tackle the learning this week.
Click on the link below to listen to the audio clip.
Writing/ ReadingWe are going to start the week by using our prediction skill.
Listen carefully to the clip and think about what may be going on. You might want to consider: * What can you hear? * Where might it be? * Who might be there? Now have another listen, but this time focus on your 4 headings from the Tell Me grid. People- who is the story going to be about? Places- where is the story taking place? Story- what is happening? Time- when is the story set? What time of day? Finally, have a go at filling in the top half of the tell me grid, writing down your ideas that you have discussed. |
Watch the video clip until 2.55, just as the spaceship leaves.
Once you have filled in your Tell Me Grid, have a go at gathering your ideas together and writing a short prediction about what you think the story is going to be about. Make sure you use contractions to extend your answers! I have uploaded a sheet to give you some ideas.
|
Parents: this is a really important time to discuss verbally with your child what they think might be happening. It can sometimes be a little tricky for us to put our ideas down straight on paper so I encourage lots of sharing of ideas, even some of yours, to help with their predicting. Also try and prompt your child to explain how they know or why they think something, it will make the next stage a little easier.
Reading
I hope you enjoyed your predicting on Monday. Today we are going to focus on our comprehension skill, finding out a little more about the story and considering a situation our character is put in.
Today we are looking at a decision wheel, this is used to consider how a character is going to deal with a difficult situation. I have put a dilemma (problem) into the middle of the circle. You then need to come up with 4 different things that might happen to tackle this problem in the circle surrounding it. Then you must come up with a positive and negative situation that may come from your choice. I have uploaded an example that I have completed to give you some ideas. |
Reading/WritingToday I want you to think about the decision wheel you filled in. I would like you to use it to write a letter to the robot telling him what to do. Choose one of the options from your decision wheel as your inspiration and consider the positives and negatives you have written about. Do not forget your capital letters, full stops and conjunctions to extend your sentences.
